Taxonomy in WordPress is a term that refers to an element that WordPress user uses every day unconsciously. Linnaean taxonomy is the biological classification term that it is derived. The term explains the grouping of posts together to create custom posts. Two popular custom taxonomies in WordPress include tags and categories. One option is to create a custom taxonomy group before placing it under an umbrella. For instance, if you have a custom post titled “books”, you can add additional categories to avoid mixing the custom post. Here, you register a new custom taxonomy titled “topics” and add romance, nonfiction, or other categories. As taxonomies are hierarchical, you will then get sub-topics based on how you need to organize the taxonomy on WordPress. Here is how to create taxonomy on WordPress.

What is a taxonomy?

Taxonomy is not specific to WordPress. Essentially, it is a scheme of classification.
In WordPress, taxonomy refers to a grouping system that is used to classify posts on WordPress. For instance, a taxonomy is similar to one taxonomy. The same is true for a tag. You can also create custom taxonomies.

What is the category?

A category is similar to a taxonomy in WordPress. As such, a single category added to a term is a category taxonomy.
A tag in WordPress is also similar to a category. It is a term found in the post tag taxonomy. Categories only differ from tags due to the fact that they are hierarchical.

How to create custom taxonomies

To create a custom taxonomy on WordPress, you need to install as well as activate the Simple Taxonomy WordPress plugin. To do so, go to settings > Custom taxonomies.

Name the taxonomy

First, you need to name the taxonomy using lowercase with on weird characters. Secondly, consider if you need the taxonomy to be hierarchical. If you need to have a taxonomy with categories with parent and child terms, you can choose “True”; else, choose “False” if you need the terms to be in the form of tags.
Option three involves the association of taxonomy with a post type. Last option involves the use of the addition of terms automatically. Here, you choose none.
However, you are not through. For instance, if you want to create a custom taxonomy on WordPress titled “Topics”, you need to give a command to WordPress on how to translate user interface regarding topics created.
Once you have provided the translation for the User Interface, press “Add Taxonomy” tabs. Once the taxonomy is created, it will always be present under posts that have similar interfaces such as tags or categories. The custom taxonomy field also appears in the post edit area.

Manual creation of taxonomies

To manage manually creating a taxonomy, you need to be knowledgeable at coding. However, if you are adept, you can visit this particular site to find a code to create the WordPress taxonomies you require.
